Good News!

Our Patchogue Village Public Safety Officers are Back in Service!

For a long period of time, Patchogue Village Public Safety, has been operating at a reduced capacity. Normally three officers are assigned to patrol our Village, in each of three shifts.

Our reduced capacity started because of one or two vandals were “Hell Bent,” on destroying our Village Pool. What a wonderful facility! Why would anyone want to destroy it? Some person had a fixation, such that they actually checked the Pool, like a trapper checks his traps! If an Officer was not sitting there, some part of “OUR POOL” would be destroyed!

The solution to our “Pool Vandalism problem” was simple; place a Public Safety Officer at the location of our Pool Every Night. This permanently removed one of three Officers from service. Most of our Code Officers are working, “Part Time.” Our village had to deal with Part Timers who did not want to work too often, and also the expected cancellations because of illness. The combination of all of the above components often left our village with no Officers, to patrol our village.

OK! Do we actually need these Officers? Does any Village need security patrols? The following observation was made by my “Number One Son.” Lets Just look around! It is a well known fact that Villages and Towns that have officers patrolling their streets, are generally more desirable places to live.

I will list a few municipalities that use officers to patrol their areas: Westhampton Dunes, Southampton, Bellport Village, Sag Harbor, Port Jefferson, Old Field, Ocean Beach, Northport, Lloyd Harbor, Etc.
Is there a town in this list that you would consider to be unacceptable, as a place that you could call home? There is an undeniable correlation between quality of life, and the use of some form of security patrol. We have seen what can happen to an unprotected municipality! For the past fourteen years we in Patchogue Village have had a Great quality of life, with the exception of some recent incidents, that might also be correlated with a temporary weakness on our primary line of defense, our Patchogue Village Code Officers.

I have recently been paying close attention to the operation of Public Safety, by monitoring their Radio Transmissions. Call it what you will, but the condition of our village is much too important to leave to the “whims of chance.” All decisions relating to our Village must be made on the basis of verifiable facts!

"And finally the good news."

Our Dept. of Public Safety, is now working with a full complement of Officers! We are now receiving the protection that we deserve. In response to our concerns, as voiced at our last General Meeting, our elected officials, took on the task, to personally schedule the working hours of our Village Officers.

Our thanks to our Patchogue Village Elected Officials, for taking the time to listen to our concerns, and then, actually doing something to correct the situation.

Thinking of Driving Through East Hampton? Think Again!
I read an article in Dan's Hamptons.com, that was beyond belief! At first I thought that the article must be just an April Fools Joke. I then researched the article and found additional references, on the Internet.

The town of East Hampton now has an new toy; a device that can read your License Plate, as you drive by; and send the data to the Department of Motor Vehicles! A report is then sent back to the Police Car.

As it turned out, Dan Rettiner fell victim to this new toy. Dan's Car was Impounded, and he was left stranded on the sidewalk, with his wife, groceries, and Dog.

You must read Dan's article!

Decide for yourself!

Commentary:
We must be very careful about what we do with technology. A computer has no mercy, and cannot show discretion! If the license Plate Reader, catches a "Wanted Felon," or a person that does not have a license at all, I could understand Impounding the Car.

I do have a big problem with Impounding someones Car, because the paper work was messed-up, when purchasing a new car. My insurance agent advised me that this type of problem, is not uncommon!

So where does this leave me? My wife absolutely loves to go to East Hampton, to shop, and have Lunch or Dinner. I no longer feel comfortable, going to a town that deploys technology that cannot show discretion! I will not be going to East Hampton, in the future, until this "Awful Device, " is removed!

Police Responsive to our request:

As reported by one of our members; the Police Department has been trying to prevent people from speeding down Maple Avenue, and "Blowing the Stop Sign," at Northridge St. It appears that the first vehicle to be stopped, was a School Bus!

Please keep Our Neighborhood Watch informed!

The biggest problem that we are having in this neighborhood, is that of Communications! No one person knows what has actually happened in our neighborhood; that includes the Mayor, and the Police Department!

From our vantage point, we know very little about what is going on in our Neighborhood, unless it happens to us!

In an attempt to try to fill the "Information Void" it might be a good idea to tabulate neighborhood problems as they occur, and forward that data to our local Government.

I think that our entire Community, would benefit if we took the time to submit to the Email Address below, a description of the neighborhood problems, such as acts of vandalism that have occurred. The tabulated data could be sent to the Mayor. Please supply as much information as possible, Date, Time, who, what, where etc. If you want your name withheld please indicate that on the Email.

Don't Forget to Go On Patrol!
If you should happen to be in your car, late at night, it would be appreciated by all, if you would quickly, travel around our Neighborhood Watch Area, which is Maple Ave, Oak St., Taber, Jayne Ave.,Northridge, Cleveland, Grant Place, Wood Ave., and Rose Avenue. It only takes a few minutes!

Don't ever stop or talk to a suspicious individual; just drive by, call 911, or the Code, and forget about the entire incident. But don't forget to let our Neighborhood Watch know what happened.

Demonstration in Patchogue:
There was a peaceful demonstration on East Main Street today April
6, 2008. For lack of a more general term, I will say that the demonstration was an anti-war demonstration, with both pro and Con factions represented.
*
I did however see people carrying signs which extended the scope of this demonstration to other arenas such as Poverty, Patriotism, Troops, Pro-USA, and Imperialism. The Anti-war faction was standing under the "Navy Marines Sign," which is owned by the Military Recruiter.

The Opposing faction comprised of mostly member of our local Military Organizations, was demonstrating from a location directly under the "Army Air Force" Sign. (See photo below)

In the Video below, you could hear the Anti-war faction singing in solidarity. (Please double click the small arrow on the bottom of the video Frame, to start the Video.)

In the Video below, you could hear the passing Cars toot their horns. I would guess that the people driving by in their cars didn't fully understand what the demonstration was about. It took me Five Minutes to determine that two factions were present.

* (Double click the small Arrow in the Video Frame below to start the Video.)

So who won the demonstration? As I see it, we all won! Try having this same demonstration in Asia and see what happens to the demonstrators!
*
Are both groups really that different? OK! I don't think that I could find one person at that demonstration, that was eager to see some foreign army rampage through our town, stealing our goods, killing people, and violate our loved ones. Absolutely! Not one person would want this!
*
So we have two groups that in some ways may want the same things! The big difference is the methodology! Some are more militant, some would rather retreat and talk about pressing matters.
*In any society, there will always be opposing factions. It is the opposing factions that force a country to follow a moderate course, which usually creates "Balance."
*
Thank God for that Demonstration! Could you have this same demonstration in Russia? I don't think so! How about China? I don't think so! How about Cuba? No! How about parts of Africa? "Nope."
*
The facility to display dissent, does indeed represent the American Way!
*

God Bless America!

Local Vandalism Update:

We have an individual, or group of individuals in our Neighborhood Watch Area, that are breaking into Cars and stealing personal possessions. The latest break-in took place this weekend, on Maple Avenue, opposite the Associate.

It might be a good idea to have an alarm installed in your Car, if you do not already have one. Security lights should also be considered.

One Neighborhood Watch Member suggested that we go on Patrol, like we did Fifteen Years ago! When going home, drive around our Neighborhood Watch Area and call the Code or the PD if you see any suspicious activity. I went on Patrol last night; with my Video Camera!

There is a community called Cloverleaf, in Brooksville Florida. In response to similar problems, the local Resident Neighborhood Watch Group, was provided with a "Neighborhood Watch Car" to be used to go on Patrol. In their case the NW Car may have come from the local Sheriffs Department! They drive with a flashing yellow light, on top of the car, some of the time, just to show that they are there. The beauty of this tactic is that everyone can see the Blinking Yellow light from inside of their houses, because of the reflections; including the "Bad Guys!" They just park and hide other times; you never know where they are going to be! This system works; they have virtually no problems. The Village should consider this possibility!

Our Village should make a formal request, to the Police Department, to deploy the the Thirteen Auxiliary Police Officers, that are assigned to the Fifth Precinct, into our area. All that would be required is an occasional "Drive-through."

"We are on our own folks!" Who is going to helping us get rid of these vandals? The Police Department is grossly understaffed; they could actually use three times more Police Officers then they have!

The Patchogue Village Constabulary does not have enough officers to deal with our problems. May I suggest that for the duration of our current problems, the village put three Constables on duty, only during the Nighttime hours. New Constables could be contractually hired as temporary, for a specified period of time.

If hiring more constables is not possible, a private security firm could be hired just to patrol our area during the night. Keep in mind that the break ins have been reported to happen between three and four AM.

WE MUST DO WHATEVER IT TAKES TO STOP THESE VANDALS FROM DESTROYING OUR VILLAGE!

We have thousands of really nice people living in our community; I'm sure that we are talking about just a few "Vandals," that must be arrested.

If you have any Ideas that we should consider, please respond to the Email Address below.

If we were able to locate a neighborhood Watch Car, would you be willing to go on patrol? If you are available for this function, please respond to this Email.

Please advise the Neighborhood Watch of any Incidents.

Synopsis of the Neighborhood Watch Meeting Feb. 21, 2008
Mayor Pontieri, Deputy Mayor McGiff and Cope Officer Verrelli, attended our meeting and answered questions about our concerns.

Members of our group asked for more enforcement with regard to problems in our area, which include illegal parking, vehicles ignoring Stop Signs, dumping, and Sixteen Wheel Trucks, speeding down Cleveland Street. The condition of roadways, drainage, and broken curbs were also discussed.

John Rocco refused to say that there was no problems in his neighborhood, for fear of "Muphy's Law." As it turned out a house was Burglarized along Meford Avenue, a few days later. When returning home late at night, be sure to drive through the streets of our neighborhood, and report any suspicious activity.

It has been reported that the reckless teenagers, that have been illegally driving their Bicycles through our village, do not live in Patchogue. Parents have been seen dropping their teenagers off in our village, so that they could "Ride," with their friends. These non residents obviously think that Patchogue is a "Theme Park!" The antics from these non resident invaders, goes far beyond "Teenagers Having Fun." An elderly woman was almost injured, property has been destroyed, and cars have been forced to swerve to avoid hitting these indestructible teenagers.

Enforcement has been stepped up, residents have seen both the Patchogue Constabulary, and the Police Department, dealing with the "out of control," teenagers. Once their parents are contacted, the problem should go away. We were informed that a Village Ordnance was passed, allowing confiscation of Bicycles.

A request has been made, that as part of the Swezey's Project, the Carnagie Library, be retained as a Museum, which is to include the Hans Henkie Collection of Patchogue Memorabilia.

Members of our Neighborhood Watch Group, also requested that the Patchogue Village Constabulary, show a high presence, both before and after Theatre Performances.

What Makes a Neighborhood Watch Group Effective?
When you see suspicious activity, never confront or even look at the suspect individuals. Smile, and make believe that they do not exist. Call the Code at 475 "Christmas" 1225, or Call 911. If you are asked for your Name, say "Maple Avenue Neighborhood Watch;" nothing more. Don't tell anyone that you made the call, except the Neighborhood Watch. Our Email Address is listed below.

Tri
-Tec/Swezey's
Presentation at Patchogue Theatre Thursday February 28, 2008.

I was delighted to see about four hundred of our neighbors present at our theatre to learn more about the new Tri-Tec Swezey's project. It appeared that everyone who attended, already knew most of the details of the project, but attended the “Information Meeting,” as if it were a social event!

Please read the Suffolk Life, and Newsday articles for technical details of the plan!

Mayor Paul Pontieri made every attempt to conceal his surprise with the number of People that attended his “Information Meeting.” After being accustomed to seeing only 30 people at the monthly Patchogue Village Board Meeting, four hundred residents must have appeared to be an army! And indeed they were an Army! A very friendly and grateful Army?

After the presentation, the dignitaries had a Question and Answer Session. The residents talked to the dignitaries, using wireless portable microphones. Of the fifty questions that were asked, only two appeared to be negative in nature. I heard a low vocal rumbling of disapproval from the audience, after one dissenter made his presentation! The audience simply was not in the mood for a naysayer!

And now "I get to tell you" about the remaining 48 questions and or statements that were made by the other Patchogue Residents. The remaining 48 queries took on the posture of the Emmy Awards. Unlike the Emmy Awards where the Actors pat themselves on the back, our Mayor and Board of Trustees received, numerous public complements from our residents.

The residents actually said “Thank You,” to the Mayor and Trustees, for doing such a great job, on this, and every other project that they have taken on. The audience applauded every time someone said something complementary, about our Politicians! Look at your TV! When is the last time you saw anyone complement a politician?

The residents and businessmen from Patchogue, are really “a class act!” The more I hear and see, the more proud I become, of our little Two Square Mile Village! It was evident that almost everyone who attended felt the same way!

There was no need to convince anyone of anything! Instead of the Informational Meeting, they should have had a party complete with a band, and served Pena Coladas at the Bar in the lobby!

Yes the meeting was informative; and we did indeed get the insight that we needed with regard to this new Village Project! And also “yes,” we should have had a big party!

Action Behind the Scenes!
As a natural consequence of writing this blog, I find myself in the middle of the Patchogue Village Information Chain. I have come to realize that our Village is "very much" a dynamic and vibrant entity. Samuel Morse would be ecstatic if he could see the massive amount of Email, that originates from village groups, and organizations, in response to a subject that needs consideration.

As soon as an issue such as "development of the Swezey Property" materializes, the electrons start flying. Hundreds of Emails are sent creating a massive On-line Colloquium. Arguments both pro and con, start flying back and forth. Computers start to heat-up due to the playful posturing! When the smoke clears, everyone then agrees on a policy or stance to take on a given issue. The Meeting or Conference, is totally over the Internet!

The main point of this article is to bring to your attention, that you have been walking past Patchogue Village, Merchants, Politicians, and Businessman, without having a complete and accurate visualization, of what they are actually about!

I have come to realize, that our Businessman, Politicians, and Neighbors are truly a bright and skillfully discerning group of individuals. I do have confidence in their ability to make valid decisions.

(Please Left click the link below, and decide for yourself)

http://www.newsday.com/business/ny-bzswez0215,0,6398167.story

I am very proud to be a resident of Patchogue! The real bottom line is that our constituents really care about the future of our village! Their decisions are indeed made with the best interests of our community in mind.

Please join your friends and neighbors, and become part of the movement to re-vitalize Patchogue. Please make every effort to attend the presentation, on February, 28, 2008, at the Patchogue Theatre. 7:00 PM.

Please forward this Blog and Email notification to everyone that you know in Patchogue Village!

The Raccoon in my Back Yard

The "Neighborhood Raccoon," visits the trash cans, in the back of my house, almost every night! This animal is obviously Italian! He will do anything for some Ravioli, or Manacotti. The "Village Raccoon" weighs about fifty pounds, but don't let his small size fool you! I have personally seen him perform tasks that were truly amazing!
.
The local Raccoon is bringing me to the verge of poverty.
As soon as I buy a new Trash Can, the local Raccoon will attempt to pull the cover off of this new container. When all else fails, Mr Raccoon will eat a hole through the cover of the Can, so that he can get his very delicious morsel of Italian Food. I don't blame him! I am now on my Fourth Trash Can, and I am now considering buying a Trash Can that is made of Kevlar; the same material that is used in Bullet Proof Vests!
.
Just when I started to feel that I could somehow co-exist with our nocturnal visitor, I read an article that made my hair stand on end! It appears that our neighbors from the Eastern Towns of Southampton and Hampton Bays have a resident Raccoon of their own! Unlike the "Patchogue Village Raccoon," the "Southampton Raccoon," weighs One Hundred and Fifty Pounds, and has demonstrated that he can bend steel bars with his bare hands!
.
You must read the article about "Southampton's "Godzilla Raccoon!"
(Please click the link below) (Second article down!)
http://www.danshamptons.com/content/danspapers/issue43_2008/06.html

Rumor is that the Southampton "Godzilla Raccoon," actually originates from Maranello Italy, home of the Farrari Sports Car Manufacturing Company. My only fear is that this Raccoon may gnaw a hole, through the Hood of my car, and eat my Automobile Engine!
