Patchogue, NY

Windsurfing
in Patchogue Bay
at Thirty Miles Per Hour

While everyone in Patchogue was staying indoors, to get away from the wind and the rain, a local athlete was enjoying the huge waves in the Great South Bay.

(Left click the arrow to start the VIDEO)

(Left click the arrow to start the VIDEO)

I have seen this person before, Windsurfing off of the Sandspit Marina.  This athlete can be seen practicing his skill, usually on Saturday and or Sunday afternoon.

Unlike other weekends I closely followed the young Windsurfer because the waves were very high, and the wind was extremely strong.  From the videos, it appeared that the young athlete was traveling at a speed of about 30 Miles Per Hour.  I once owned a small boat and it only went 28 MPH at full throttle.

When I saw the person fall off of his Surfboard, into the cold and stormy seas, I closely observed him, just in case he was unable to get back up. The surfer eventually demonstrated that he was indeed  proficient at getting back up on his Surfboard while in the water.

I would have given Windsurfing a try when I was 18 years old, but for now, viewing through the lens of a Camera is just fine.

FYI: a close inspection of the photos revealed that the surfer was indeed wearing flotation equipment for safety; unfortunately many young people would not have been as smart as this young man.

New Patchogue YMCA Brought a Smile to my Face
Yesterday my wife and I decided to visit the New Patchogue YMCA, to "take a look" at the new facility. I was impressed with the new facility. The Locker Room is the most important part of the building, that could make or break your Health Club experience. In the case of our Patchogue YMCA, the locker room has everything one could possibly want.
*
A representative from the "Y" personally escorted my wife and I through the Gym, Aerobics Rooms, and finally to the Pool. A single room caught my eye! This room had a few desks, a Ping Pong table, a Shuffle Board Table, and a few Computers. I exclaimed! Wow! A Recreation Room........Do teenagers have to be a member to use this room? Our guide quickly responded; No we let teenagers in to this room, free of charge if they can show that they are currently attending school. This room is available to our children to do their homework.
*
I can by personal experience relate to this; it's called "Caring."In the Fifties, many people, groups, and organizations went out of their way to help children and Teenagers; not just their children, but any and all children! Today, community assistance to children is not as prevalent as it could be; that is why I was impressed with the YMCA!
*
I can personally attest to the importance of caring; the YMCA has demonstrated that it does indeed care for children and Teenagers! With a really big smile on my face I say "Kudos," to the YMCA. Why? Because they care!
*
(Now... don't have your children get off the school bus at the YMCA; please make a phone call, in advance, to get the details.)

Quanza

December 26, marks the beginning of the Seven day African American Holiday of Quanza.

The founders of the Holiday of Quanza had the wisdom to realize the importance of community values. Quanza stresses family, community unity, respect, ancestry, and the value of hard work.

Most of all, the founders of Quanza realized the value of educating their children.

As stated earlier in a previous post in this Gazette

" If we do not provide our children with something to identify with, they will figure out something for themselves."

Happy Quanza!

Amazing Facts About Patchogue!
I re-visited a web site that I had previously used to gather statistical data; my last visit revealed many upgrades to that site. The Web Site has always been reasonably comprehensive; but now it fits into the "World Class" category! You might want to visit

http://www.clrsearch.com/RSS/Demographics/NY/Patchogue/

It is this last category that got my attention!

Crime in Patchogue.
The programmers that designed the "Crime Database," calculated a number which they call the "Total Crime Index." This number represents the probability that you will be the victim of a crime. This number does not represent any particular crime, but an average of all crime. Keep in mind that the number 100 represents the national average crime rate. So! The number 100 represents the crime rate, that would be normal, for most cities in the United States.

Looking at the percentages below, the towns of Bellport and Westbury, are in the Disneyland category! Crime? What is that? These towns have a crime rate of 1 and 2 percent of the national average, respectively. The numbers are amazing!

The town of Patchogue has a Crime Rate that is 80% below the national average! Take a look at some of the listings at the bottom of the list! Atlantic City, has a crime rate which is three hundred and Thirty Eight percent greater than the national average.

Look at the towns that are placed directly below Patchogue; this data is utterly amazing! I have repeatedly published articles, proclaiming that Patchogue is not a God forsaken crime ridden area, and it is not! I have also stated that the residents of Patchogue interact as family, and not as adversaries, and indeed they do! Now I have the data to back-up my statements!

(Please examine the data below)
CRIME RISK
Bellport 1
Westbury 2
Glen Cove 22
Stony Brook 22
Sayville 23

We should take up a collection to send the next "Patchogue bashing" journalist, to a therapist, to treat his or her case of "Writers Block."

Mastic Beach may Incorporate
Residents of Mastic Beach are looking at Patchogue Village, as a role model, and are also trying to follow in the foot-steps of our monumental success story. A channel twelve editorial seemed to express the opinion that incorporation for Mastic Beach only means Bigger Government! The editorial is completely wrong, and exemplifies lazy journalism. It is a lot easier to sit at your computer for an hour and just put a few words on paper, than to actually hit the road and get the facts!

We the members of the Maple Avenue Neighborhood Watch, together with the incorporated village of Patchogue, were part of that monumental transition, from a crime ridden slum to a world class community. No doubt about it; this transition would not have been possible, without the incorporated village of Patchogue.

The formula for re-vitalizing a community is complex, and must take into account, the opposing forces, that tug at each other in an attempt to bolster their own private agendas. The Patchogue Village Code Officers, along with the village Housing and Highway Departments are unilaterally responsible for the lovely appearance of our village.

Keep in mind that the landlords that do not live in the houses that they own, may at first, be on the opposing side! In the case of Patchogue village, the value of our homes increased by over 30% as the neighborhood improved. Today most of the landlords see the wisdom of maintaining the appearance of the neighborhood that contains their investment. This amazing transition would not have been possible without the dedication of our current slate of Patchogue Village officials.

Rehabilitation of a community requires the constant cooperation of many agencies. All agencies such as, the Neighborhood Watch, the Patchogue village Code, the Police Department, and local government, must work together in concert. If any single link in this chain is broken, the rehabilitation may fail! All of the above groups are absolutely required to bring back a community.

Kudos to the municipality of Mastic Beach; don’t let anyone talk you out of your new village, and your new community!

Tri
-Tec/Swezey's
Presentation at Patchogue Theatre Thursday February 28, 2008.

I was delighted to see about four hundred of our neighbors present at our theatre to learn more about the new Tri-Tec Swezey's project. It appeared that everyone who attended, already knew most of the details of the project, but attended the “Information Meeting,” as if it were a social event!

Please read the Suffolk Life, and Newsday articles for technical details of the plan!

Mayor Paul Pontieri made every attempt to conceal his surprise with the number of People that attended his “Information Meeting.” After being accustomed to seeing only 30 people at the monthly Patchogue Village Board Meeting, four hundred residents must have appeared to be an army! And indeed they were an Army! A very friendly and grateful Army?

After the presentation, the dignitaries had a Question and Answer Session. The residents talked to the dignitaries, using wireless portable microphones. Of the fifty questions that were asked, only two appeared to be negative in nature. I heard a low vocal rumbling of disapproval from the audience, after one dissenter made his presentation! The audience simply was not in the mood for a naysayer!

And now "I get to tell you" about the remaining 48 questions and or statements that were made by the other Patchogue Residents. The remaining 48 queries took on the posture of the Emmy Awards. Unlike the Emmy Awards where the Actors pat themselves on the back, our Mayor and Board of Trustees received, numerous public complements from our residents.

The residents actually said “Thank You,” to the Mayor and Trustees, for doing such a great job, on this, and every other project that they have taken on. The audience applauded every time someone said something complementary, about our Politicians! Look at your TV! When is the last time you saw anyone complement a politician?

The residents and businessmen from Patchogue, are really “a class act!” The more I hear and see, the more proud I become, of our little Two Square Mile Village! It was evident that almost everyone who attended felt the same way!

There was no need to convince anyone of anything! Instead of the Informational Meeting, they should have had a party complete with a band, and served Pena Coladas at the Bar in the lobby!

Yes the meeting was informative; and we did indeed get the insight that we needed with regard to this new Village Project! And also “yes,” we should have had a big party!

"Patchogue First" Press Conference:

Many of us often vote for a candidate simply because they appear on "Row A, or Row B, or Row C!" Why? Very few of us have the time or facility to gather information about what our Local Government has done, and what they plan to do in the future! Modern technology has changed "all that!"

While looking through the "Local News Feed" section of our Blog (Gazette), I stumbled across an article that said "Patchogue First Press Conference!" After tracking down the actual Web location of the Press Conference, I was ecstatic to see that our Mayor and Trustees, who are members of the "Patchogue First Party," put up a Web Site, complete with videos, airing their recent Press Conference.

I'm still jumping up and down in my chair! Patchogue Village, the little two square miles village, is once again blazing yet another trail; this time, on the Internet! Their Web Site contains four videos, showing their Press Conference in it's entirety! Wow! It's like going to the movies, and watching a Newsreel! This is exciting! How about a "Monthly Video Address" from the Mayor?

MUST READ ARTICLE IN DAN'S PAPERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Artist from Milan, is arrested at his Premier Art Exhibit in Southampton; he allegedly stole over 2,000 light bulbs, and glued them together, to make his Masterpiece!

The article is hysterical; I would have paid anything to have attended the Art Show! The "scene" at that Art Show would make a great movie.

Click the link on the next line to read the article that was published in "Dan's Papers."

http://www.danshamptons.com/content/danspapers/issue39_2007/10.html

Where would a person go to steal over 2,000 light bulbs?

I wonder if this artist also had a Christmas Tree at his display?

There is a good chance that we are not dealing with a local Misguided Child, but a "Misguided Artist from Milan! Ha! Ha! Ha! I can't believe it!

Lights Stolen From the Nativity Scene in Patchogue
In two occasions within the last two weeks, the lights from the K of C, Nativity Scene, in Patchogue, were stolen. The monetary loss for the Christmas lights was minimal, but we are more concerned with the intent. I am more inclined to believe that we are dealing with a few misguided children, acting like children! If you should see any suspicious activity near the Nativity, please call 475 1225 (475 Christmas)

Christmas Tree Stolen From Emanuel Lutheran Church on East Main Street
A six foot Christmas tree and two Flags, were stolen from a Christmas display that was set-up in front of the church. The tree was held down with heavy wires, which were cut, in order to steal the Christmas Tree.

Now! Who would steal a Christmas tree? This is a “No-Brainer;” it must be a Christian! Obviously this “Christian,” does not know anything about the Bible; if he did, he wouldn’t have stolen the tree in the first place!

If you steal a Christmas Tree from my property, you may have a problem; if you steal a tree from God’s property, you absolutely, beyond a doubt will have a very big problem. From a Christian viewpoint, once you loose “Davine Protection,” everything in your life could “go wrong.”

Message Directed to the Person Who Stole the Christmas Tree
Do yourself and your community a favor! Return the tree, and the Flags! The flags have no value on the market, but are valuable to the church.

We Are Guilty of Littering
Saturday 12/22/2007:
While feverishly doing my Christmas shopping, I noticed a few Neighborhood Watch Signs, that were still fastened to poles, from our last meeting. OK! Then I also noticed that many of the Plastic Straps, that were used to hold our signs, were still attached to the poles, where our signs were displayed. I recall asking our membership to remove our signs, but I didn't consider that they would have to deal with the "Plastic Straps!" These straps are impossible to remove, without tools! In Fact; these straps are used by some Police Agencies as Handcuffs! They simply can not be removed, easily! Two hours later, all of the straps have been removed, Plus, debris left by other people. My apologies to the Village of Patchogue!

Have a Merry Christmas

Christmas Boat Parade in Patchogue Village

On Sunday November 18, 2007, the Patchogue Chamber of Commerce, The Grucci Fireworks Company, and Patchogue Village, sponsored the Annual Christmas Boat Parade. I have attended this event faithfully, as a spectator, for many years. This year I actually participated in the Boat Parade, by serving as a crew member on one of the boats. Pleasure Boats and even a few Ferries were elaborately decorated, and piloted down the entire length of Patchogue River, for the spectators to enjoy.

Click the bottom arrow, twice, to start videos!

The amount of effort that went into decorating these vessels was monumental! I was amazed to see three young ladies dressed up in Christmas Attire, doing the Can Can on their boat. They actually looked very professional. The people just loved them! The winner actually constructed a float on top of his boat. His display looked like a Float that you would see in the Macy's Parade! The parade was complete with a Judges Stand, and an announcer!

No Christmas Parade would be complete without the arrival of Santa Clause! Santa arrived one week earlier then usual. He did not arrive by land, but by water. Santa was sitting on top of another Boat, waving and talking to everyone!

Before the Parade, the Boat Captains gathered in the Great South Bay, with their Decorative Display lights "off." Thank God the water was calm. The Captains were communicating with "Event Control," via Marine Radio. Then came the command to "Turn on the Lights!" My Generator, would not start! Murphy's Law. " A Generator, will not start, when it knows that you are really depending on it!" It eventually did start!

From the Boat, I was able to get a perspective on the parade that truly "Jump Started my Holiday Season!" I saw about Five Thousand people, standing along the banks of the Patchogue River, really "getting into the festivities." The spectators "Just made my day!" I saw hundreds of young Patchogue Residents, demonstrate that "there is life beyond Rap Music!" To my surprise, the young residents were screaming, singing, and waving their arms above their heads, in time with the music, that was played from every boat! The message was clear; they were really enjoying the parade, and they were well rounded enough to participate in it! I am very proud to be a member of this community!

At the end of the Parade came the grand finale, "The Grucci Fireworks!"

More Rock Attacks on Medford Avenue
A rock was thrown through the Plate Glass Window of the Singer Store, on Medford Avenue, and Northridge St. this makes the fourth act of vandalism, within five days. Evidence was found at the scene and is now in the hands of the Police Department. A Rock was also thrown through the Plate Glass Window of the old Flower Store that is currently closed, one thousand feet northeast of the Singer Store. There has also been complaints of Garbage Dumping at this location. We have an "out of control," individual or group of individuals.

Please go out of your way to patronize our local Merchants on Medford Avenue, in order to help buffer their losses.

Christmas time is upon us and Mr. Potter is again trying to destroy Bedford Falls; in this case, Patchogue Village.

Some local group of people, are actually trying to collect 2000 signatures so that he can force a vote, that could dissolve the Patchogue Village Incorporation. In short, our village would cease to exist, our first line of defense would be fired, and our Code Officers would be sent home! Where does this leave us, the residents of Patchogue Village? This scenario leaves us in Pottersville! We don't want that! This jargon comes from the Movie "It's a Wonderful Life; which from it's inception has given us a true and powerful message. The Mr. Potters of this world are a scourge to humanity. They can only think of themselves, and do not care if their actions turn our village into a slum!

In his publication, the person or group that originated this obscene action, justifies itself because of "Village Issued Tickets, and alleged "high taxes." Tickets? You violated a Village Ordnance, and deserve the fine! Taxes? We expect to pay slightly higher taxes by virtue of supporting our Village Government.

Our Mayor, Paul Pontieri, and the current slate of Trustees are our first line of defense in keeping our village Crime Free. It is our Village Government that works directly with the Police Department, and Neighborhood Watch Groups, to make sure that Our Village stays "the way we would like it to be. Get this same degree of support from the Town of Brookhaven? It wouldn't happen! The only municipalities that retain an acceptable Quality of Life, are those that also retain a Constabulary.

The opposition may ask, why am I so concerned about retaining Village Government? Because I am as "Greedy " as you are! Transient Crime runs through our village about every "Seven Years;" just like Locust! I would guess that this is normal for most Communities. If you read the 2001 section of this blog you will see that our House Values appreciated by $50,000., at that time. The appreciation was a direct result of our Village Government Cleaning-up our Village! Home Owners, and even "Slum Lords," take note! If crime is again allowed to take over our village, the value of your home will drop by 60 Percent, just as it did fifteen years ago. If you sign that petition, be prepared to loose about $300,000. That hurts! You could buy a Condo in North Carolina for that amount of money. If you are a Landlord, and own, five houses in our village, you will loose 1,500,000. Dollars. Damn 1.5 Mil! You won't have much of a retirement if you sign that petition.

Wow Therapeutic Writing!
Now I feel Better!

More Vandalism in Our Village!
At about Nine PM, on Thursday November 8, 2007, the same night as our General Meeting, someone threw a huge Rock through the back window of someones car on Wood Avenue. Reports also indicate that a rock was also thrown through the Plate Glass Window, at "Papa John's," Pizzeria, on Medford Avenue.

I can recall that this same type of vandalism happened in Patchogue Village about ten years ago. Some misguided person broke many windows in our village, and caused thousands of dollars in damages! It took a special effort, on the part of the Patchogue Village Constables to stop the needless destruction of property. The Constables were stationed at key Observation Points in our village, around the clock, observing our village with Binoculars. When they saw the criminal return, the Police were called, and the "Rock Thrower" was arrested. He never knew how he was discovered!

Could our Patchogue Village Constables, protect our Community, by once again initiating a village wide stake-out?
Honestly! I don't think so! Ten years ago , there were somewhere around Thirty Patchogue Constables; today we have a grand total of Thirteen Constables. It appears that the amount of crime in our village is inversely proportional to the number of Village Constables. It also appears that our Village Government would like to "get rid of" the existing Thirteen Constables!

Actually I could understand that. We as a community have become complacent, because we were spared the misery of crime for many years. Honestly, "Things were good!" No real problems until now. If I were an elected official I may have made the same decisions, given the same crime free time period.

We must now look at the current situation, and decide what to do about it. It is actually a "No Brainer," we must do what worked in our village the last time we had problems; hire more Constables.

In our times of trouble, the Patchogue Village Constables, as well as the Auxiliary Police, acted as the "Eyes and Ears" of the Police Department. As suspicious activity was reported, the Fifth Precinct, acted on it! Being a former Auxiliary Police Officer, I can say from first hand experience that the police effort was tireless and outstanding. Once the Fifth Precinct puts their focus on the criminal element, they don't stand a chance!

Fifteen years ago we had Thirty Constables, Twenty Five Auxiliary Police Officers, and the entire Fifth Precinct; a virtual Armada, in a village that is only 2.2 square miles. We now have Thirteen Constables, and about twelve Auxiliary Police Officers that are attached to the Fifth Precinct. It will be difficult to slow down the criminal activity, because of the reduced number of Constables and Auxiliary Police.

Our Mayor, Paul Pontiere, along with other Trustees, played a key role in stopping our Crime Rampage, fifteen years ago. He has the "know how," and I am sure that we will again see an end to excessive crime in our village!

Thanks to everyone who attended our Nov. 8, 2007 General Meeting of the Maple Avenue neighborhood Watch!
At our Nov. 8, 2007 Meeting, information was conveyed to Local Authorities, and the Police Department. Issues such as Assault, Theft, Burglary, Speeding, Vandalism, Soliciting, Intoxication, and Code Issues were discussed. Now that we have a clear picture of the problem, our local authorities can now deal with these issues.

The Maple Avenue Neighborhood Watch Gazette goes "Online"
Many of you may remember the old MANW Gazette when it was distributed in printed form. Each edition was neatly packaged in a Plastic Sandwich Bag, to protect it from the elements. New editions of our four page newsletter were often dropped on front lawns, or stuffed between the links of a Chain Link fence.

With our minds on the Twenty First Century, all future editions of our publication, will be online. We will try to provide, information relevant to our Neighborhood Watch Group, as well as cultural and social information that is paramount, to our development, as a community.

Our new online newsletter will allow us to realize visions of our community, that many people have been denied in the past. As I have been told, some area residents requested that the local media, publish a photo, and article of the "Garden of the Month." This was absolutely rebuked by the Mainstream Media. It was members of our Neighborhood Watch Group, that wanted to see local acknowledgements for work that members of our group, have done on their houses and property. We may be too small for the Mainstream Media to deal with, but, because of the new media, we can now Publish our own "Garden or House of the Month Acknowledgement; Complete with photos and videos! If we can re-establish a committee to address this issue, I will publish the article, in our own Gazette.

Twelve Cars Vandalized on Rose Avenue
It appears that Patchogue Village has taken a Giant Step Backwards! For years we have not had an excessive amount of crime in our Neighborhood Watch Area. Within the last two months, twelve cars were vandalized on Rose Avenue, and other houses and properties were burglarized, on Northridge St., and Maple Avenue.

A General Meeting of the Maple Avenue Neighborhood Watch, is scheduled for November 8, 2007 , at the Grace AME Zion Church, on Cleveland Street, Patchogue, NY, at 7:00 PM.
