Sad News!

Burghardt Turner passed away January 11, 2009

Burg was a former resident of Patchogue. He lived on Maple Avenue, and was a neighborhood activist. He worked along with many of us to create a better Patchogue!
*
Burg was an amazing and interesting person to talk to! Among his many credits he was, a former President of the Brookhaven NAACP, one of the founding members of the Unitarian Fellowship of Bellport, NY, and held the distinguished title of Professor Emeritus, at Stony Brook University.
*
Dr. Turner was an active supporter of many organizations for the blind. Burg was progressively loosing his eye sight in his latter years, but still directed all of his attention to others, instead of himself!
*
Many Patchogue Residents may remember Dr. Turner as one of the first African American teachers in the Patchogue School District.

*
Dr. Turner was known for his outstanding work in Civil and Human Rights. The source of his passion becomes amazingly obvious, when all of the facts are put down on the same piece of paper! Dr. Turner served his country in the “African American 92nd (Buffalo) Division at Fort McClellan.
*
Dr. Turner is no longer physically with us, but the fruits of his labor and passion will never die. The Turner Fellowship Program, which has helped hundreds of academics, remains as a living testimony to Burghardt Turner.

Paul Pontieri Receives Prestigious Commendation!

Being in the same room with prestigious people such as Stuart Rabinowitz, President of Hofstra University, Shirley Strum Kenny, President of Stony Brook University , and Jon Cooper Long Island Campaign Chair for the Obama Presidential Campaign, is an honor in itself. Our mayor Paul Pontieri was selected by Long Island Business News, as one of the ten leaders that changed Long Island.

It is now a given that our mayor is now in the Major League, with all of Long Island as his ball park!

(Please enjoy the article below)

It is great to see Paul Pontieri recognized. He and the entire administration have done a great job. There is still work to be done but most mayors and their office would sit back at this point and coast. For us, the best is yet to come. I commend them for taking chances and not falling into the trap previous administrations have in acting like the only way to revitalize Patchogue was though retail (Mayor Keegan was the other exception). Many residents were scared of going the entertainment route but Mayor Pontieri and his administration have done an excellent job in calming those fears. I've been in Patchogue for most of my 32 years and my friends constantly asked me why I stayed. I said just wait, you'll see. Now, they are here 1 or 2 days a week taking advantage of the blossoming restaurant and bar scene. A couple of them are thinking of moving to the village or at least closer to it
