On Sunday, November 9th, Mayor Pontieri offered a terrific presentation on Patchogue’s past, present, and future, as part of Stony Brook University’s "Our Environment" series. The presentation, packed with photographs, maps, and interesting factual material, was entitled "Patchogue: A Community in Transition". The story he told spanned from 1893, as the Village began as a port of entry and industrial river community, evolved later into a tourist destination with a huge hotel, experienced a period of decline in the 1980s and 1990s, and subsequently transformed, today, into a vibrant 21st century community with a bright future.

It is quite encouraging to see that Patchogue, with Mayor Pontieri’s leadership, is developing into a great destination with a downtown that offers amenities such as shopping, restaurants, and a Theatre for the Performing Arts. The attractiveness of the downtown area is also enriched by its historic buildings, including the post office and several churches that are over a century old. Within the village is excellent public transportation, including buses and the Long Island Railroad, and housing for a diversity of income levels. Ferries to Fire Island bring recreational opportunities within easy reach of the Village’s other amenities, enabling residents and visitors to combine a pleasant outing on the beach with enjoyment of the cultural attractions of the village.

The future of Patchogue looks even brighter than the present. The planned public square and restaurants with outdoor seating will add to Patchogue’s attractive cultural ambience. With the prospect of higher energy prices in our future, we need communities such as Patchogue that offer people housing, shopping, cultural activities, and transportation all within easy walking distance of each other.

I enjoy your blog and only wish you'd include some listings about whats going on at the Patchogue Theatre. We who volunteer there could use a lot of help to get the word out on our upcoming shows.

    Thanks,
