Great Entertainment in the Patchogue Theatre

Residents of Patchogue should make every effort to take advantage of the entertainment that is presented in our own Patchogue Theatre. Many of the productions that are presented in our theatre, are just as dynamic as the theatre performances that can be found in the New York City Theatre District.

Theatre goers that attended the Christmas Show last week, reported that the entertainment was spectacular! Coincidentally this production was called the "Holiday Spectacular!"

Crime in Patchogue

Patchogue Village also a Victim of November Hate Crime

The Media has wrongly, chosen to publish geographic associations, that best suit their articles. Patchogue Village, East Patchogue, and the town of Medford, were grouped together, as if they were one municipality. Patchogue Village is a separate incorporated Village that has absolutely no connection with East Patchogue, and the town of Medford, NY, except for their common school affiliation. The criminals that committed the hideous hate crime last November, were not residents of Patchogue Village.

The Media just couldn't resist playing the “Racial Tensions” Card! This term definitely has a negative connotation, when used and linked to a municipality.

Do we have racial Tensions in Patchogue Village?

If we do, the members of this Neighborhood Watch group were not aware of them. It is sad and unfortunate that the Hispanic community did not report incidents of violence, for fear of deportation. If this Neighborhood Watch group had any suspicion that people were being attacked, something would have been done about it! A suggestion to solve the communications problems will be discussed in another section of this article.

Does Patchogue Village really deserve to be labeled as racist?

No! We the residents of Patchogue Village are not the type of people that would attack anyone! On the contrary, we hire many from the Hispanic community to work in our village. Patchogue Village has not only been violated by these criminals, and also by the Media. Bad publicity due to Media articles that were composed in haste, could ultimately result in the loss of some jobs, due to a flawed perception of Patchogue Village.

I suspect that the media will choose to challenge my premise! I would like to extend an invitation to the Media, to meet with a panel of Neighborhood Watch Members, to discuss the Alleged Racial Tensions, that they flaunt! Crime by non residents has always been a problem in Patchogue Village, simply because we are a metropolis.

Is Patchogue Village a crime ridden area?

It was a crime ridden area fifteen years ago. Our crime problem which is now ancient history has since be taken care of, by the many concerned groups in our area. When I say crime in Patchogue Village is “Ancient History,” I refer to criminals actually living in Patchogue Village. Fifteen years ago, the criminals were our neighbors! Thanks to the Police Department, The Auxiliary Police, the Patchogue Public Safety, and the Neighborhood Watch, the criminal element has chosen to live somewhere else.

A few months ago I invited a representative from The Suffolk County Police Department, as well as the Mayor, and Deputy Mayor of Patchogue Village, to attend our Neighborhood Watch Meeting to discuss neighborhood problems. To my embarrassment, there were no problems to report. This scenario is the norm, rather than the exception!

Everything I say about the low crime rate in Patchogue Village, is verifiable by our Neighborhood Watch Members. I did not make up this statistic, I just reported it!

Has Patchogue Village done enough to create a safe environment for its residents?

The Village of Patchogue should be considered as a model for all other communities to follow!

Our village has an area of about two point two square miles, with a population of about, ten thousand residents. At the height of our crime problems fifteen years ago, our Village supported thirty two Constable/ Public Safety Officers. Was there any legal mandate that required our village to support security/ code personnel? No, but these personnel were being voluntarily supported, with our tax money.

In addition, Patchogue Village also sponsored in part, four Auxiliary Police Officers that worked under the direct control of the Suffolk County Police Department. The Patchogue Village Auxiliary Police Unit, acted as the “Eyes and Ears of the police Department.

In addition to the above, my Auxiliary Police unit of ten Officers, supported by Suffolk County, also patrolled Patchogue Village, and its surrounding area.

In addition to all of the above, the Suffolk County Police were behind every Rock, and around every corner!
We had as many as Sixty Six Police and support personnel patrolling our village 24/7; I did not even include the Three Hundred and Fifty Neighborhood Watch people that were also in tune to Neighborhood Problems. Our Village has become a family through “Trial by Fire!”

The huge Armada of personnel that was used to quench Crime in Patchogue Village, was virtually unheard of since world War Two. The battle was vicious, and we won the war!

Peace has prevailed for the past twelve years, and as a result, our village currently supports twelve Public Safety officers; that is twelve more than the number of officers supported by many of our neighboring communities! The Suffolk County Fifth Precinct currently manages an auxiliary Police unit of about nine officers.

In recent years, serious crime has declined in our village, and as a result, an Armada of Police Agencies was no longer needed; resources were moved to the High Crime Areas where they were needed. Our Neighborhood Watch Group has also helped to keep Peace in our area by keeping track of neighborhood problems. The criminals simply didn’t have a chance!

I cannot think of any municipality that has done so much to protect it's residents.

Patchogue Village has, for over a decade, been a wonderful and safe place to live! “This was no accident!”

One street in our village has suffered major vandalism two years ago; and the alleged perpetrator has been identified as someone that does not live in our village. Another case of violation by an outsider!

Unfortunately Patchogue was chosen as the location to perpetrate a hate crime, because of its high Hispanic Population. I do not know what we can do to prevent that except to put up Iron Gates! Hopefully Steve Levy could give the status of Constable to our Public Safety Officers; this could be a deterrent to future transient crime!

How Can the Guardian Angels help our community?

The appearance of the Guardian Angels in the streets of Patchogue had the appearance of being politically motivated, because the patrols took place in the wrong location, and at the wrong time. There simply were no Hispanics in the streets, at the time of their patrols. Curtis sliwa and his Spanish speaking guardian Angels, could indeed perform an invaluable service to Patchogue Village by again returning to Patchogue, to disseminate emergency contact information to the Spanish speaking residents of West Patchogue. They must be made aware of the various ways to anonymously feed information to the local government, and Police Department. It has become obvious that if the Spanish speaking community knew how to anonymously feed information into the system, this hideous crime may not have happened! The problem is that it is difficult to find Spanish speaking volunteers; however, all of the Guardian Angels do speak Spanish. The Guardian Angels also have the advantage of being trusted and respected by the Spanish Community.

I have heard talk about someone forming a Neighborhood Watch group in West Patchogue, but until that actually happens, the neighborhood leaders are welcome to maintain connectivity with our neighborhood Watch Group, which does not normally service West Patchogue. All that is needed is their name and Email addresses. We already have one temporary associate member from West Patchogue!

On Race and Creed Issues

This Neighborhood Watch group, as well as the Patchogue Village Government, has on many occasions acted on behalf of the Hispanic Community; many of which are members of our group. We also have a wonderful relationship with the International Community. Our group works in concert with people from many ethnic groups, who directly provides invaluable services to us, that we cannot afford to pay for ourselves. We are proud and grateful to receive the support from the International Community, and they are eager to help us

Our Neighborhood Watch Group has had positive experiences with regard to multicultural interactions; just the opposite of what the term “Racial Tensions” implies! It is truly sad to see Patchogue Village being essentially chastised by both the Media and the National Hispanic Groups, both of which have not taken the time to find out what the residents of Patchogue Village are really made of! We are not a population of people that are frothing at the mouth, just waiting for the opportunity to commit a hate crime! We are a multicultural community that works together as family. We are one of very few communities that can say that we interact as family; race or creed is not part of the equation.

The tragic beating and stabbing of Marcelo Lucero last month is incomprehensible. I still have trouble accepting the fact that a human being was killed in our village. Let the Media not forget that Patchogue Village Residents had nothing to do with perpetrating this crime; it was done by transient criminals that did not live in our village. Patchogue Village is also a victim, in spite of its proactive approach to crime prevention.

Comment from the editor!

The following article (two paragraphs down) appears to chastise "Patchogue Law Enforcement" for allegedly "Not filing a report."

The Village of Patchogue does not have Law Enforcement Officers;" the village does have Public Safety Officers. Patchogue Public Safety Officers, are not Peace Officers, and consequently are not empowered by the County of Suffolk, to make arrests and file reports.

This is part of the problem! I personally feel that if Public Safety would have had Peace Officer Status; they would have had the power to discourage Transient -Non Resident Criminals, from "stalking Hispanics" in the streets of Patchogue!

Unfortunately they still do not have Peace Officer Status! How many deaths does it take for Suffolk County to do what must be done?

Good News for Patchogue Village Homeowners!!

Patchogue Village Bond Rating Elevated to AA

As a result of good fiscal policy, our current Patchogue Village Government has managed to keep our village indebtedness down to a minimum, by applying for funds that are available to local governments, for improvements in infrastructure. As a result of this, and many other prudent actions, the taxpayer has contributed little or nothing, to pay for the many wonderful community projects that are now either completed or in progress!

Since Paul Pontieri and his current slate of Trustees took office, the Patchogue Village Bond Rating has been elevated from what was considered to be slightly above a Junk Bond Rating, to a coveted Rating of AA

What effect does this rating have on us, the general populous? If our Village had to apply for any type of Bond, the interest rate would be reasonable. In today’s current lending environment, money may not be available to municipalities with a low Bond Rating. It is a common practice to charge municipalities astronomical interest rates, if they have a less than perfect Bond Rating. Our "Standard & Poors" AA Bond rating, will reflect a substantial monetary saving, when it filters down to the homeowner.

Is this Good News? Absolutely!

Kudos to our Mayor, Paul Pontieri, Trustees: Gerald J. Crean, Joseph P. Dean, Lori B Devlin, John A. Krieger, and Stephen J. McGiff, Deputy Mayor. Our thanks also go to Patricia M. Seal, Christopher P. McGuire, and Ronald M. Krawczyk for their part in cultivating this coveted AA Bond Rating.

It appears that Santa Clause has just arrived in Patchogue Village!

Please read this article before going on to the rebuttal article below!

"Anonymous" Comment about our Village Public Safety (Code Officers)

One problem, according to the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services, Patchogue does not have a Constabulary. They have not had any of the required training except for the Basic Course for Peace Officers. They don't even receive annual firearms training. The state also has 84+ hours of required additional training for Peace Officers to perform traffic stops. Let's call them what they are, Security Guards. There is nothing wrong with the title "Security Guard". Leave the police details to those who are properly trained.

Rebuttal Comment from Anonymous:
Anonymous has left a new comment on your post "
"Anonymous" Comment about our Village Public Safet...":

Patchogue Constables did have yearly qualifications in firearms with Police certified instructors they where also trained in the use of the ASP along with OC pepper-spray. And received Peace Office training by the Suffolk County Sheriffs Dept. The same course as the correctional Officers, Spca, Suffolk county Fire Marshalls and all other Peace Officer positions. The same course required by DCJS The Suffolk County Probation Dept also provided them with gang training. So check the facts before you write.

Comment from the Editor:

Patchogue Village is not a high crime area; the people that cause trouble in our village usually do not live hear! It is for this reason that the Patchogue Village Constabulary was formed some Fifteen years ago. I do not speak for, or represent the Patchogue Village Government; I only speak as a long term advocate of having Constables patrolling our streets at night.

Twenty years ago many of the Municipalities in Suffolk County signed a document with Suffolk, forever precluding them from having a “Police Force.” At that time, the county wanted to protect their investment in the Suffolk County Police Department Infrastructure! This is understandable!

The Patchogue Village Constabulary, was slowly rendered ineffective because of pressure from special interest groups (see note at the end of this posting). Without the authorization from Suffolk County, Patchogue Village could not nurture a Constabulary. The Constabulary markings, on the Village Cars was replaced with signage that says Public Safety, because our Officers were denied Peace Officer Status. Is this a deterrent to transient criminals? Absolutely not!

The tragic death of Marcelo Lucero, in our village has forced everyone to again look at this issue! Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy, had absolutely nothing to do with signing the law that prevented our village from protecting itself from transient criminals. It’s about time that that this “Broken Law,” was forever erased from the Suffolk County Law Books.

So what can we do to improve security?
Assign three Suffolk County Police cars to Patchogue Village 24/7, permanently. The County of Suffolk should consider this option.

Have the Guardian Angels patrol the streets of Patchogue Village between the hours of 10 PM and 2 AM, when the employees are leaving work.

Give our Patchogue Village Officers, Peace Officer Status, and again put the Constable signage on our Public Safety Cars!

Have the restaurant owners inform Public Safety of the time that employees will be leaving for home.

NOTE:
It has been reported that the document that prompted "Comment from Anonymous" to write a rebuttal, did not originate from the Police Department. The author of that document obviously has his own private agenda! There are many isolated groups in Patchogue Village, with private agendas!

My agenda is not at all private; I encourage doing whatever is necessary to maintain our quality of life!

Do we have an acceptable quality of life in Patchogue Village?

Do we need the protection offered by the Guardian Angels?

Has the media portrayed us as a community that basks in hate crime?

So what is your opinion?

Comment from Anonymous:

Do I feel Patchogue is safe? I feel Main Street is. Where I live…not so much. It may have to do with the fact that the quality of life in my immediate area (West Patchogue near the water) is declining due to the housing students, the lack of police patrols, and the hesitancy of locals to do anything to stop these occurrences. The bars on River have added to the problem, what with the traffic and the intoxication of the patrons when they get behind the wheel. My friends and I have been harassed several times, and one time someone hung out of a car and hit my brother with a baseball bat (luckily, all he got was a bruise.) The west side of town is in decline. The people who do not live there only see the restaurants and the college and the businesses. They don’t see the whole picture…what happens at night to the locals. Something needs to be done.

Comment from Anonymous:

Look the parade is on Nov 23 and a week prior to the traditional parade that the Village does call the Christmas Parade. Why can't we recognize that there is a holiday season and that the decorations such as Snowmen and Reindeer are really secularized symbols anyway and while casually associated with the season are not really religious symbols. The Grucci offer of Fireworks had strings attached from the beginning and was designed to create an issue that is making the village look bad and hurting our merchants.

*

Comment from the editor:

Yes I do agree! The offer to provide Fireworks if the name of the Boat Parade is changed to the Christmas Boat Parade, does indeed represent a conditional offer. The offer was made publicly, and was approved by the committee that organized the Boat Parade. Why is it that the phrase “had strings attached from the beginning,” sounds so sinister?

*
The phrase “was designed to create an issue that would make the village look bad,” is reckless and irresponsible! Your phrase implies premeditation, and could be considered by some as libelous. There simply is no evidence to support that allegation.

Comment:

I started browsing your archives, and of course the debacle of the whole Boat Parade Holiday/Christmas name game is mentioned. (Hey, it’s on my blog too…. http://cheapdateli.wordpress.com ) I’m going to make a mention of it and what truly bothers me about the whole thing, if that’s ok. I see that many people are up in arms over the Christ being taken out of Christmas, and the crass commercialization of this holiday. I have no problem with Christmas (the crass commercialization, however, I do…), but let me explain my point of view of embracing the term “holiday”. Right now, we are celebrating Christmas, New Year’s, Kwanzaa, Hanukkah; Diwali and Ramadan were not long ago either. I minored in theology for my first degree…I’m a spiritual person who believes in Jesus, so I’m not some liberal who is trying to whitewash and one size fits all. However, I must point out that most of my friends are NOT Catholic/Christian. I have Jewish friends, Muslim friends, Buddhists, you name it. I don’t discriminate. I put up my “Christmas branch”, while my friends light menorahs, candles, and lanterns. To me, pushing Christmas as if it is the ONLY celebration worth noting is a supremacist notion. The people who refuse to acknowledge the religions of others are going against the teachings of their own religion and practicing bigotry. Of course, they won’t see it that way, but it is the case. One of my friends, who knows how strongly I feel about this topic even printed me a little cartoon with all the icons of all the major holidays that states “Happy Everything”. The fact is that no matter what your religion, your culture, this is a time we should all come together as one and celebrate what this time of year should really represent, which is love. It’s not the fact that we’re trying to squeeze the Christ out of Christmas…we’re trying to make sure that all the people we care about get included in the merry fray! Think about it…how would you feel if you were married to someone from India , and their family refused to acknowledge your holiday—in fact, acted as if it didn’t exist at all? That Diwali was all that you could acknowledge… I forgot which religious figure said it, but I thought he summed it up nicely: “The world’s religions are all different paths to the same God.”

Christine E. Rudkowski
