Plaza Theatre on the Road to Demolition!

For decades the Plaza Theatre on Main Street, in the Eastern Business Corridor to our village, has been both an eyesore and a hazard. For decades transients repeatedly broke into the building and took up residence.

During the winter months, fires were started inside of the building, by the illegal transients, in order to keep warm. It is miraculous that nearby residents and businesses were not “burnt out,” as a result of the open fires that were set inside of the building!

Correspondence has been ongoing with the County of Suffolk with regard to this eyesore, and hazard in East Patchogue. Philip Butler, former Board Director of the Greater Patchogue Chamber of Commerce, has repeatedly solicited reports from the County of Suffolk, with regard to the demolition of the abandoned Plaza Theatre.

On Tuesday April 7, 2009, a status report was sent to Philip Butler, by Suffolk County Legislator, Jack Eddington. As reported, both the Town and the County are interacting with the current owner of the abandoned Plaza Theatre, on two levels, simultaneously! The first level is discussion of a “friendly purchase,” of the property in question; the second level is a not so friendly, Eminent Domain Process.

The resolve of the County and the Town is evident! It appears that within the not too distant future, we will be rid of this dangerous eyesore, in East Patchogue.
