Bed and Breakfast Issue in our Village!
Someone who lives in the vicinity of Lake Shore Drive, Patchogue Village, thought it would be a great idea to change the Village code, to allow creation of a Bed and Breakfast, in any area of our village including 1A Residential. A proposal was submitted to our village, and addressed by our village government.

At the March 9, 2009, Patchogue Village Board Meeting, the issue of allowing applications to open a Bed and Breakfast, in a 1A residential area, was considered. This change to our code would allow an applicant to start a Bed and Breakfast business, next to your house!.

It appears that we in the Maple Avenue Neighborhood Watch have been focusing on certain issues and ignoring other issues. As I have said many times, when our quality of life is acceptable, we as a group tend to be passive.

I must admit that I did not know that this important issue was being considered at the March 9, 2009 Village Board Meeting! I wish that the agenda of upcoming Village Board Meetings was published on the Village Web Site. “Joe the Plumber,” simply doesn’t have the time or the desire to rummage through the legal notices every week! I would rather go to the Beach!

Someone did their homework! All and every rule pertaining to allowing someone to open a Bed and Breakfast in a residential area was meticulously laid out. Go to the Patchogue Village Web Site and read the Minutes of the March 9, 2009 Board Meeting.

http://www.patchoguevillage.org/

Twenty five residents from Patchogue signed a Petition opposing establishment of code allowing a Bed and Breakfast in 1A Residential areas of our village. A few non residents, and two residents, spoke in support of allowing a B&B to operate in 1A Residential Zoning.

Some local residents see a Bed and Breakfast as yet another Boarding House.

Honestly, I personally have a big problem with a B&B in any area of our village. I personally am in favor of a moratorium on Bed and Breakfasts, as well as Boarding Houses. We must learn from our past, or else we are doomed to repeat it.

Another resident was concerned that TriTec, the company that is going to build the Hotel, might be upset with the possibility of new legislated competition.

The Patchogue Village Board reserved decision; that means that it could be passed at any time without notice, possibly in a different form, such as allowing a B & B to operate in the Historic District! I doubt that this could be passes in any form, in lieu of the overwhelming opposition to this issue.

I personally feel that the village of Patchogue is literally crippled when it comes to housing issues. A member of this Neighborhood Watch Group said that her neighbor is operating an illegal boarding house, but the village could do nothing. (Please forgive me for not giving specific details! It would be totally reckless of me to divulge information that could be used to bolster yet more illegal Boarding Houses!)

Reply to Joe the Plumber:
Dear “Joe the Plumber”:

Please be advised that the Village Board Agenda is posted on the Village website on the Friday prior to the Monday night meeting (2nd and 4th Monday’s of the month). On rare occasions we are unable to post it on Friday, but as a general practice, it is always posted by the close of business on Friday.

Comment from a MANW member:

A member of our NW said that he is not against a Bed and Breakfast, in a "Tourist Area," possibly near the water, but against a B&B in a residential area.

Maple Avenue Gazette goes interstate
I recently visited longtime friends in New Jersey. My wife and I met Eddie and Arlene Forty Six years ago on our honeymoon in Bermuda. We managed to maintain contact through the years, and even visit each other occasionally. On my most recent visit, to celebrate Eddie’s 70Th Birthday, I started to talk to Eddie about local Patchogue issues. To my surprise, Ed knew exactly what I was talking about, and also had opinions on our local issues! I was surprised when Ed told me that he has a shortcut to our Gazette on his desktop, and reads it occasionally! Wow what a surprise!

I hereby make Eddie and Arlene honorary consultants to the Maple Avenue Gazette, simply because they care enough to look!

My definition of a friend is someone who calls or emails, once a year, to see if I am dead or alive! Reading this Blog also fills the above requirements!

Thank you Ed and Arlene for a wonderful time!

Happy Birthday Ed!

Graffiti in Patchogue
The graffiti situation is getting better in Patchogue Village. As I understand the untalented Graffiti Artists are placing their efforts outside of our village.

The pressure is on and at least three agencies are gathering evidence against the people that are guilty of defacing our village, with the trash that they call Art.

A few individuals have installed new "Space Age" Video Cameras that are capable of reading the inscription on a School Ring, from three blocks away.

Video files of vandals in action have already been sent to the Police Department for their evaluation.

There is zero tolerance for Graffiti in Patchogue. As soon as Graffiti is discovered, it is painted over by village residents.

How can this guy become immortal like Rembrandt;

when Patchogue residents are just as busy covering up pseudo masterpieces!
*
Residents are currently required by law to remove Graffiti within Thirty days, under penalty of a fine.
*
Being law biding citizens, most Patchogue residents cover up the Graffiti within Six to Eight hours.
*
The village of Patchogue might not be the best place to become immortal through your art work.

Not all Graffiti is Trash!
Although the subject matter of the photo makes me sad, it is indeed a piece of Art. This piece of art, can be found in the Town of Brooksville, Florida.
Notice that the Graffiti Artists in Florida are smart enough to recognize and respect a piece of Artwork, when they see it! This work of Art remains untouched, for everyone to appreciate!

Notice to the Graffiti Artists!
My father once told me to only hang-out with people that I respected and admired; because I would, in time, become exactly like them!
Do you admire your friends?

The County Road 19 Construction Project!

The upcoming road work on CR 19, Waverly Avenue , is the direct result of a three year campaign of cleverly orchestrated emails, originating from the “Patchogue Beautification Committee (PBC)”. (A committee empowered by the Greater Patchogue Chamber of Commerce (GPCC).

The work on CR 19 may also includes removing the fence at Patchogue Lake , and turning the area, into a pedestrian mall that would flaunt our lake instead of hide it! This Patchogue Lake portion of the project requires the cooperation and involvement of Patchogue Village at some level.

If this County Road 19 project were “left alone,” it is a certainty, that it would not have been implemented. The road construction portion of this project did indeed have the dynamic support of the PBC!

It is always a pleasure to watch “Master Tennis Players,” interact with skilled and deliberate actions, in order to win the game! It is also a pleasure to watch equally skilled merchants and municipalities, act out their own rituals that very closely resemble the strategy that one would use in a tennis match!

A series of over Thirty, short emails were played back and forth between the Patchogue Beautification Committee, and the County of Suffolk (COS).

The game started with Philip Butler ”lobbing” an email at the County of Suffolk . Now a lob in a tennis game is meant to distract your opponent so that you can again attack, before he could figure out what happened! Keep in mind that these emails usually had no more than ten words in them. These emails were designed to be short and concise, using the old “Kiss” Theorem, “Keep it simple stupid,” as their template! There is wisdom in the old ways!

After about eight emails were sent back and forth, the county started to use a well known Tennis technique called Shadowing! Shadowing is “going through the motions, without actually doing anything!” The PBC responded with an email that resembled a “Drop Shot” that is commonly used in a tennis game. A “Drop Shot” will land at your feet, where it is impossible to use any countermeasures.

Somewhere around email number Twenty five, the county sent back a few emails that behaved like a “Tennis Slice Serve.” A slice Serve in “Tennis” is sent with a spin on it; the intent of the spin is to have it change direction, when it hits your section of the court! Yep! This strategy works for both Tennis, and emails! Now this was not enough to deter our Patchogue Beautification Committee!

At email Twenty Eight the Patchogue Beautification Committee brought out the “Big Guns,” by expediting a “Tennis Smash Shot.” They selectively inserted this CR 19 issue, into emails that were sent to The County of Suffolk, which were about completely different subjects.

In “Tennis” “Love” means zero or nothing! This issue if left alone, by itself, would have yielded a score of “Thirty/Love.” Because of the efforts of our Patchogue Beautification Committee, the score is Thirty One/ Thirty, in our favor! We won the contest with the County of Suffolk, and CR 19 construction will begin on April 20, 2009.

The second stage of this project that involves Patchogue Lake, and the Village of Patchogue, is still considered by many, to be worthwhile, and deserving of consideration.

Hey! It’s nice to win once in a while!

Unfortunately, most roads I have driven on that have been resurfaced lately, appear to be deteriorating much faster than older road surfaces. Let's hope this is not the case here.

Plaza Theatre on the Road to Demolition!

For decades the Plaza Theatre on Main Street, in the Eastern Business Corridor to our village, has been both an eyesore and a hazard. For decades transients repeatedly broke into the building and took up residence.

During the winter months, fires were started inside of the building, by the illegal transients, in order to keep warm. It is miraculous that nearby residents and businesses were not “burnt out,” as a result of the open fires that were set inside of the building!

Correspondence has been ongoing with the County of Suffolk with regard to this eyesore, and hazard in East Patchogue. Philip Butler, former Board Director of the Greater Patchogue Chamber of Commerce, has repeatedly solicited reports from the County of Suffolk, with regard to the demolition of the abandoned Plaza Theatre.

On Tuesday April 7, 2009, a status report was sent to Philip Butler, by Suffolk County Legislator, Jack Eddington. As reported, both the Town and the County are interacting with the current owner of the abandoned Plaza Theatre, on two levels, simultaneously! The first level is discussion of a “friendly purchase,” of the property in question; the second level is a not so friendly, Eminent Domain Process.

The resolve of the County and the Town is evident! It appears that within the not too distant future, we will be rid of this dangerous eyesore, in East Patchogue.

What happened to the Maple Avenue Associate

A few months ago, George the owner of the Maple Avenue Associate, could not come to an agreement with the owner of the building on Maple Avenue, that formerly housed his business. George was forced to make a decision, and consequently moved his business to a new location in the town of Medford, along Highway 112.

When a business moves to a new location, the proprietor can usually expect a slight decrease in business; but this is not what happened! As it turned out Georges business doubled in a matter of weeks.

The new location has a tremendous flow of traffic, as well as adequate parking. It didn’t take long for the Medford residents to discover what we already knew; the dishes that George prepared using his “Secret Recipes,” were simply outstanding!

My wife asked me to drive her to the new location of the Associate, to buy some meat and prepared dishes for a family party. Within fifteen minutes I saw three residents from Maple Avenue enter the store. The people that patronized the Associate when it was located in Patchogue, are now traveling to Medford, in order to buy the products that they have become so fond of.

Courtesy and protocol might mandate wishing George “Lots of luck;” but that would, in this case, be inappropriate. Another merchant in our area mentioned that Luck had nothing to do with George’s success; it was pure skill and business know-how.

Oh! What the heck! Lots of luck George!
